NEW TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS -
for current info click here
The proposed implementation timeline has two phases:
- Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S.
citizens, traveling by air
between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South
America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present
a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant
Mariner Document.
- As
early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S.
citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central
and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or
sea (including ferries), may be required to present a
valid passport or other documents as determined by the
Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative
changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and
Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon
as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the
public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea
entries.
DOCUMENTATION ISSUES
The scenarios below represent several common issues that
clients ask us about and the solutions.
Q. Do I need a passport to go on a cruise to Mexico or the
Caribbean in 2007?
A. Technically no, however there is a potential problem with
this. For example, if you are onboard a cruise and have to deboard
in a foreign port for medical or other reasons and need to fly back
to the United States. Without a passport, you would not be able to
enter the U.S. because you are flying into the country. For this
reason we advise all travelers to get a passport.
Q. The name on my birth certificate don't match the
married name on my driver's license.
A. You will need to take a copy of your marriage license
which shows the name change in addition to your birth certificate.
Q. Do my kids need passports/documentation too?
A. Yes
Q. I am divorced/separated, can I take the kids out of the
country on vacation?
A. Yes, but you should get a notarized letter from the other
parent giving you permission to do so. You may not be allowed to
leave the country without this letter. It should also include the
specific trip details on it.
Q. My passport is about to expire, can I still use it?
A. In most cases your passport needs to be valid for at least
3 months after the return date of your trip. You should not attempt
to travel with an expired passport.
Q. I am authorized to work in the U.S. but I have a Visa
not a passport, can I travel?
A. You must contact the appropriate embassy or contact a
local immigration office directly to answer this question
